According to the EPA, "A typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of CO2 per year." That’s equivalent to 4 and a half 27 foot tall telephone pole or a filled up balloon with a diameter of 10 yards. How can we reduce the number of cars on the road?

My sister, who goes to Yale University, proposed this idea of a carpooling app where students can ride with other students to the same destination. Everyone leaves to the same handful of airports and train stations so why not split an Uber with someone and save some gas?

Initial Idea

Our idea didn't change much from our initial sketch. The idea was simple: find someone with a similar journey as yours and connect with them.

Inspiration to Wireframes

I took heavy inspiration from BlaBlaCar and Airbnb. I really liked Airbnb's searchbar and BlaBlaCar's dashboard.

Version 1

Working with student developers, we wanted to create a working website as soon as possible. I started with a very simple design with minimal features to make it easier and faster to code.

  • Need a separate button to create a post

  • Simply saving a post might be confusing - unable to tell if a ride is filled

  • Add a in-app messaging feature

  • Is the landing page necessary?

We wanted to add a social media aspect where students can follow friends and see their rides.

Version 1 Revised

Version 1 Revised

Too make life easier for the developers, we…

  • Got rid of the profile page and added a My Rides and My Bookmarks page

  • Instead of Requesting Rides within the site, users will have to message the person outside the site

  • Requesting Rides was also changed to Ride Details where users can just see the note

  • User can see how many seats and bookmark a ride on the post

As the developers continue to make Yideshare a reality, the next phase of the project would include:

  • iterating on the mobile version

  • adding features that were scrapped due to time

  • conducting usability testing to make Yideshare more accessible and widespread
